About the area
An hour of driving will take you from the Town of Chase to the City of Salmon Arm, traveling through several small communities including Sorrento, and a short excursion through Notch Hill.
Chase is set off from the Trans-Canada Highway with 3 turn-offs to enter the town. When you arrive in Chase you will be greeted by friendly hospitality, community-owned businesses and a revitalized downtown area. The town offers several types of accommodations, public beach, sports complex, bowling, shopping and cafes and restaurants.
Sorrento is a 15-minute drive from Chase and is an unincorporated community located on the Trans-Canada Highway. Community-owned businesses offer products and services; campsites, hotel, Bed and Breakfasts, and RV parks offer accommodations; and the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market is always a favourite showing off the talents and product of local community members and groups.
Notch Hill is a farming community south from the Trans-Canada Highway. Home-based businesses, community historic site, bed & breakfast and the museum will get you out of the busy highway traffic. Notch Hill is a historic community site featuring the community hall, Little White Church and the Brown School. The maple trees and picnic tables offer a great picnic site and there is about 3 kilometers of easy walking along the roadside. Scenes and panoramas for picture-taking abound. Jim’s Ford Corral Museum is 1.9km south from the community site located on the mountain-side overlooking the valley. A quiet bed & breakfast in a country cabin with horse-drawn sleighs, wagons and farming equipment set you back in time. The organic vegetable farm, cedar-mill, cabinet-making, carpenter and mechanic businesses offer quality services and products. At the end of Notch Hill Road you are back on the Trans-Canada Highway and on your way to the next community.
Tappen begins “just over the hill” from Sorrento, another unincorporated community with a couple of gas stations/convenience stores, a restaurant and farmland. A 30-minute excursion from the TCH along Sunnybrae Road takes you along the shores of Shuswap Lake, past rural community businesses, and private and public picnic areas, campsites and beaches to Margaret Falls parking lot. A short walk from the parking lot following a creek through the deep ravine of ancient trees and moss-covered slopes brings you to the waterfalls. Something that you must see before leaving the Shuswap! A couple of hours later you are back on the Trans-Canada Highway, driving along the shores of the Shuswap Lake and following the Canadian Pacific Railway, only minutes to Salmon Arm.
